Frequently Asked Questions:

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a natural, drug-less approach to healthcare. It is based on the premise that in order to be truly healthy, you need to have all channels of communication within your body, wide open and flowing freely. In your body these channels are your brain, spinal cord and nerve systems. Chiropractors examine your body for nervous system irritation or interference by locating Subluxations and then removing them through Chiropractic adjustments. Chiropractic care on a regular basis allows the body to communicate better, become stronger and more resilient to handle stresses, deal with illness and bounce back faster. Chiropractic is a true form of preventative healthcare.

What is a Subluxation?

A subluxation is a compromise or irritation to the nervous system, mainly at the spinal levels where your nerves originate from your spine. This compromise can be a result of spinal bone misalignments, stretching of nerves, irritation to nerves or chemical or emotional stresses. All of these may affect the proper function and balance of your nervous system and flow of energy. In turn, this effects the functioning of your entire body.

If I go to a chiropractor, do I have to go for the rest of my life?

Most people who experience the full benefits of chiropractic continue to get checked and adjusted regularly, because they enjoy the elevated level of health they experience with chiropractic care. How long you choose to benefit from chiropractic care is always up to you.

What is an Adjustment?

A Chiropractic Adjustment occurs after a Doctor of Chiropractic has completed a thorough examination and identified the existing areas of Subluxation in your spine. The actual adjustment involves controlled movements of your spinal bones with varying amounts of force, touch or pressure. There are many different techniques of adjustment to suit each individuals needs.

Does an Adjustment Hurt?

No!
If anything it is the noise people comment on the most. The most common shock patients mention is the noise they hear when their necks are adjusted. To explain it the way the children do…it sounds like popcorn popping!

How should I feel after an Adjustment?

Many people say that they feel immediate relief. As the hours pass you may feel some muscle stiffness, as things which have not moved in a long time have been moved into their proper places.

Why should I continue to see a Chiropractor when I feel fine?

Even though the symptoms that caused you to originally seek chiropractic care, may have disappeared you probably still have spinal degeneration, which was caused by years of untreated vertebral subluxations. This does not mean that you will be getting adjusted 3 times a week for the rest of your life. Most people start to learn what is good for their own bodies. A Chiropractic maintenance schedule can vary from once a week to once a month. Dr. Colleen will work with you to see what is best for you to keep you at optimal health.

How long do I have to stay under care?

Forever!
Chiropractic care can best be compared to dental care. You go to the dentist twice a year, whether or not you are suffering from pain and this helps to prevent pain and problems in the future. When you consider all the work your spine does keeping your body upright and moving, don’t you think it deserves checkups too? Think of a monthly chiropractic wellness visit, as a cleaning for your spine, without the Novocain!

Is Chiropractic safe for pregnant women?

Chiropractic is very safe for pregnant women and actually gives them great relief during their pregnancies. Many pregnant women love coming to get adjusted on Dr. Colleen’s table, which allows them to lay on their stomach, thanks to a drop down piece in the table.

Is Chiropractic safe for Seniors, even those with osteoporosis?

Absolutely!
Chiropractic is a gentle form of healing. Seniors who come under chiropractic care have varying goals. Seniors who are active with no physical limitations use chiropractic care as a preventative form of healthcare to maintain their active lifestyles. Seniors who are suffering from certain degenerative diseases can hope to slow down the progression of these diseases, as well as alleviating some of the associated pain.

Just as you schedule regular checkups for your children’s teeth, hearing and vision, you should also be scheduling their spinal checkups. Remember the spine is protecting the spinal cord, which transmits messages and energy to every part of the body. If there is some type of subluxation in the body, no matter how small, it can lead to a lowered resistance to disease, organ malfunction, sickness and disease. Today’s active children can have abnormal stress in their spines from falling off bikes, skateboards, snowboards or any other sporting injuries. Many parents (and the children themselves) tell us that after coming under regular chiropractic care they see an increase in their children’s energy levels, a decrease in the frequency of sickness and a decrease in the amount of antibiotics they are taking.
