The Massage and Reflexology Center at Back to Health

Bernadette McDougal

Bernadette McDougal, CMT is the owner/operator of The Massage Reflexology Center located within the walls of Back to Health Chiropractic Center. Bernadette is a Certified Massage Therapist who has been practicing the art of Therapeutic Massage for the past ten years here in Bergen County. Bernadette's skilled hands learned the technical aspect of her craft at the Holistic Center located in the serene and beautiful Ukia Mountains of Northern California. Bernadette attended the International Institute of Reflexology, where she studied the Ingham Method. Bernadette is an exclusive practitioner of the Ingham Method in Reflexology in Bergen and Rockland counties. These years of schooling have allowed Bernadette to learn the technical aspects of massage and reflexology. Yet, it is her love, devotion and strong belief in these healing arts, which truly makes her special touch "hands and feet" above other massage and reflexology experiences.

At the Massage Reflexology Center there is a strong belief that everyone can benefit from massage or reflexology. Doctors believe that over 75% of today's health problems can be linked to nervous stress. It has also been documented that 30% of all healing begins at touch. It is the mission of the Massage Reflexology Center that each person leaves their treatment with a greater sense of mind and relaxation and a stronger balance of body, mind and spirit.

Types Of Massage

Wellness Therapeutic Massage

Wellness massage is a wonderful addition to everyone's preventative maintenance health routine. The goals of a wellness massage are to increase circulation and lymphatic flow, encourage relaxation and release muscle tension and discomfort.

Swedish Therapeutic Massage

Swedish Massage is a form of bodywork which uses relaxing strokes to increase circulation of blood, as well as increasing the flow of the lymphatic system. A major goal is to speed the venous return of unoxygenated and toxic blood from the extremities.

Deep Tissue Therapeutic Massage

Deep Tissue Massage utilizes slow strokes, direct pressure and or friction for optimal results. As he name implies, this form of massage uses the application of greater pressure and delves into deeper layers of muscle than a Swedish massage.

Lava Stone Massage

The concept of Lava Stone Massage was founded in India over 5000 years ago, where the ancient healing traditions were practiced and perfected. This culture believed that the most effective way to heal was by turning to those gifts from the earth, such as herbs, flowers, crystals and stones. Lava Stone Massage uses hot stones to help relax the muscles and draw out muscle pain and discomfort, thereby connecting the body's energy paths for a rebalancing of the body, mind and soul.

Geriatric Therapeutic Massage

The goal of Geriatric Massage is to make life more enjoyable for the elderly by helping them maintain their health and even regain physical capabilities, which may have seemed lost forever. In geriatric massage special consideration is placed on age-related health conditions, as well as the psychological and sociological aspects of aging.

Pre-Natal Therapeutic Massage

Good nutrition, ample rest and regular pre-natal massage benefit not only the mom-to-be, but also the unborn child. Pre-natal massage benefits include relaxation, increased circulation, and improved digestion, as well as maintenance of skin and muscle tone. Pre-natal massage is also a wonderful way to ease the physical discomfort which may accompany pregnancy. As the body changes and grows during pregnancy, women may experience shoulder pain, back pain or sciatica, as a result of their shifting posture. Many women also experience headaches, leg cramps, and muscular discomfort. During this massage a soft body pillow is used to support you in a comfortable side-lying position. Extra concentration will be placed on the lower back, shoulders, and neck. This is a wonderful, soothing and natural way to address the varied symptoms associated with pregnancy.

Reflexology

Reflexology is an ancient gentle form of healing, which has been passed from generation to generation. It is a science, based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet which are relative to every organ and part of the body. Stimulating these reflexes properly can help many health problems in a natural way. It is a gentle form of preventative maintenance. Reflexology is also able to improve the nerve and blood supply.

Some of the major benefits of Reflexology include:

  • Rejuvenating and re-energizing the body, mind and spirit
  • Improving quality of sleep and inducing a feeling of incredible well-being
  • Increasing confidence and vitality
  • Helping sluggish or inactive areas of the body
  • Helping to counter-act fatigue.
  • Helping to reduce nervousness, anxiety and fear.
  • Helping to calm hyperactivity.
  • Helping to ease aches, pains and discomfort
  • Helping to detoxify the body.

For those who are anxious about therapeutic massage, reflexology is a great way to experience a release in stress and tension. Reflexology is also a wonderful alternative for those undergoing chemotherapy, who are unable to have therapeutic massage.
